Why Our Kids Go To Lakeview - Leanne Peterson (Parent)
In compliance with federal statute, it is the practice of Lakeview Academy as a Title II participating school to inform parents of registered and attending students of their right to request information regarding the professional qualifications of their students classroom teacher(s). Lakeview Academy will provide upon request, and in a timely manner, information regarding state qualification and licensing criteria, licensing status, degree and certification held, and other relevant qualifications.
Who is the Board of Trustees, and what do they do?
The Board of Trustees (BOT) is a group of appointed and elected individuals who are accou table to the state, to ensure that the Charter is upheld; laws are followed, and the financial viability of the school is maintained. Presently all board members have children which attend Lakeview throughout all grade levels.
When Lakeview Academy first opened its doors, the Board of Trustees was heavily involved in the day to day operations of the school. As time passed, the BOT has slowly made the effort to remove itself from the day to day operations of Lakeview Academy. More recently the BOT has made a concerted effort to transition into a governing board, versus an administrative board, as was the case in Lakeview
Academy’s first months/years. As part of this transition, the BOT adopted a governance policy.
The first paragraph of the policy states:
“The board will govern with an emphasis on (1) outward vision rather than internal preoccupation, (2) encouragement of diversity in viewpoints, (3) strategic leadership more than administrative detail, (4) clear distinction of board and director roles, (5) collective rather than individual decisions, (6) future rather than past or present, and (7) proactive rather than reactivity. “
The board looks to uphold this policy, in part, by listening to public, staff, and board comments at its monthly board meetings. As a public entity, the business of the board must be done in view of the public, much like a city and its city council meetings. Board meetings are the board’s way of doing business with the administrators, and school as a whole.
The role of the BOT is to indicate “what” Lakeview is going to accomplish (goals). The role of the staff is to determine “how” Lakeview is going to accomplish the goals outlined by the board.
Lakeview Academy has a dedicated staff which is eager to see students learn, grow, and succeed. As the BOT we too are dedicated to seeing Lakeview Academy, including its students and staff, learn, grow, and succeed.
Several years ago, as I researched different charter schools; I was thrilled to find Lakeview Academy and identified strongly with the school's vision of meeting the individual needs of each and every child through differentiated instruction as well as real life experiences. I became part of the school's Founding Council and have actively served in several different capacities such as the Elementary and Middle School Academic Committees,Academic Advisor and member of the Site Advisory Council.
As I reflect back over the past four years, I am overcome with how far we have come! It has been an incredible experience. It has been a privilege for me to serve with such a committed administrative team, exceptional teachers and aides as well as so many dedicated parents as we have collaboratively and successfully implemented the mission and philosophy of the school!
As I look towards the future, I am confident that we will continue to build upon the strong foundation that has been built in order to provide every student the opportunity to to succeed and reach their full potential.
My husband Marc and I have four beautiful children and enjoy spending time together as a family. I enjoy chocolate, reading, sports, outdoor activities, classical music and the arts. I have a B.A. in French and Humanities, with a teaching emphasis from Brighman Young University. Prior to my involvement with Lakeview Academy, my previous educational experience includes teaching Special Education, French, English, and Preschool. I am grateful for these experiences and know they will prove invaluable as a member of the board.
Julie is passionate about education and loves being involved in every aspect of her children's education. While home-schooling, she ran a boys club, reading group, and Monthly Celebrations club. She also served as the Administrative Assistant and was on the Board of Directors at a small private school, overseeing most of their fundraising efforts while her children attended. Since transferring to Lakeview Academy, she has enjoyed volunteering in the classrooms and during school events as much as time allows.
Julie is the mother of 3, has a Bachelors in Communications from the University of Utah, is a part-time Realtor, loves the outdoors, rock-climbing, sewing, reading and most of all, spending time with her family.
I believe that our children need to put forth effort in order to learn. Teachers are responsible for cultivating a learning environment, giving direction, and support. Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with youth, in a variety of settings. As a coach of youth sports, I instilled in my players the following; work hard, give your best effort, and always strive to improve upon your past performance. It is by doing these things you become a winner. Lakeview Academy and our children will continue to be winners if we collectively work hard, give our best effort, and strive for continual improvement.
Having been born and raised in northern California, I moved to Utah to attend college at Brigham Young University. In 1995 I graduated with a BS degree in Physical Education, with and Athletic Training emphasis. Over the past eleven years I have worked for Nature's Way in Springville, UT. I currently work as the Planner. My wife and I live in Lehi with our four children. Our three school-age children attend Lakeview Academy.
When Sir Winston Churchill was called to head up the war effort for Great Britain, he remarked that his whole life had prepared him for this hour. While I certainly have no delusions that I am another Churchill, I do feel that all my life I have been preparing to work in education. From my earliest memories I seemed to have been taking mental notes on what made a particular teacher effective. In fact, when I graduated from high school I had boxes filled with project ideas, feeling I would need them someday.
Besides having had the opportunity to observe good teachers, I have been fortunate to have had many work and volunteer experiences which have added to my formal preparation for teaching. I taught first grade for three years. I have also had the unique opportunity to work and serve on several committees that have restructured current education practices. These included working on a restructuring committee at BYU, working with curriculum for Alpine School Districts alternative High School, and consulting for Alpine School Districts Title One program. I come to the board with a wealth of experiences in education.
Having seen and experienced first hand many frustrations a teacher experiences has served only to strengthen my resolve to make Lakeview Academy the best school my children can attend. I want to help create a school that reaches out to each student allowing them to reach for the stars. I feel that like Winston Churchill, I have been prepared for this hour.
I have four children. They are precious and dear to me. When I think of their future, and the world into which they will emerge, I am compelled to do what I can to prepare them academically to meet their challenges with their full potential. My desire is to uphold and enhance the Lakeview Academy charter, volunteer my talents, and empower the administration and teachers to inspire, uplift and build confidence in the children attending Lakeview Academy.
I support well-rounded curriculum including reading, history, art, music, and technology. I encourage education that helps children experience and understand the vast world around them, and teaches them foresight to be prudent in their future. I pray that my children will leave Lakeview Academy with a love for learning that will stay with them for their entire life.
I bring to the Lakeview Academy board a history of:
My name is Justin Turner and I was born and raised in American Fork, Utah. I met my wife while attending Utah Valley State College, we have been married for 16 years, and have six children. Five of our six children attend Lakeview-Academy and our two oldest have been with the school since it opened. Our children attend 9th, 8th, 4th, 2nd, and Kindergarten.
I am a graduate of the University of Utah with a degree in communication. I furthered my education with comprehensive training in facilitation, negotiation, and mediation from the University of Utah. With this certificate I became a licensed divorce court mediator. In addition to this I volunteered twice a week for two years within the Salt Lake and Utah County small claims court system.
My work history started at an early age on my grandparents farm in Highland and at 16 years old I began working in the construction industry. I gained valuable experience including how to run a business. After obtaining my degree I worked for the Department of Workforce Services in various capacities while mediating on the side.
I am currently working for Stevens-Henager College as a State Programs Coordinator. Two recent accomplishments that I am proud of include becoming a Pilot and riding in the Tour De Cure.
Our Mission
Lakeview Academy's mission is to develop Capable, Confident, and Contributing members of society through learning experiences which foster growth, creativity and character development. These "three C's" are an integral part of the purpose and design of our program and the school takes great pride in developing these noble qualities in our students.
Capable: A student who is knowledgeable, inquisitive, and an open-minded problem solver.
Confident: A student who is able to approach situations with courage, integrity and a strong sense of self-worth.
Contributing: A student who is caring, responsible and proactive in his/her family and community.
Our Philosophy
Lakeview Academy believes that learning should be exciting and never-ending. Thus, our primary goal is to help our students and their families embrace the idea that learning is a life-long joyful experience which extends beyond the classroom. We strive to create a learning environment that is fun and exciting as well as challenging. In addition to traditional teaching methods, the school's students gain knowledge from hands-on experience, reflection, and real-life application of things they have learned in the classroom. Collectively, these varied learning experiences result in authentic understanding gained from personal knowledge. The arts, technology and community service are fundamental dimensions of this experience. Rich opportunities for experiencing these areas are integrated throughout the school program and provide students with a distinct and useful understanding of the world around them. The school also encourages and provides opportunities for students to use the "three C's" to make a difference in their community and become productive members of society.
